In Florida, an injunction is a court order that directs a person to do or stop doing something—most often used to protect individuals from harm or threats. Injunctions are commonly associated with protection against violence, harassment, or stalking.

Some Types of Injunctions in Florida

Generally, Florida allows for several specific types of injunctions, especially in cases of personal safety:

Domestic Violence Injunction

  • For protection against abuse by a spouse, ex-spouse, family member, or someone you live(d) with or have a child with.

Repeat Violence Injunction

  • Requires two or more violent incidents, one within the last 6 months.
  • Can be used for neighbors, classmates, coworkers, etc.

Dating Violence Injunction

  • For individuals in a romantic or intimate relationship within the past 6 months.
  • Must show fear or actual violence.

Sexual Violence Injunction

  • Can be filed even if no charges are filed, after a report to law enforcement or cooperation in a criminal case.
  • Covers sexual battery, lewd acts, luring of a child, and other sex crimes.

Stalking Injunction (including cyberstalking)

  • Protects against unwanted, repeated harassment or threats.
  • Does not require a relationship between the parties.
